  • Adirondack-Style Rocker

    Follow ALL SAFETY GUIDELINES AND RECOMMENDATIONS provided by the manufacturers of your tools, and any chemicals such as glue and finishes you use in this project. YOU are responsible for your safety, so use common sense when working in the shop!
    Instructions

    Use the layouts below for creating the Seat Rails, Back Legs, Back Leg Supports, and Front Legs. Make two of each part, and make sure one of each set is a mirror image of the other in the set. Set your Kreg Jig and drill bit for 1 1/2" stock for all pocket holes except those on the outer side of the Front Legs. For those holes, set your jig and bit for 1" stock.

     

    Use the layouts below for creating the Rockers.

    Back Legs (2) - 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 35 11/16
    Back Leg Supports (2) - 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 14 11/16
    Rockers (2) - 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 x 39 7/8
    Front Seat Rail - 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 27
    Back Seat Rail - 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 27
    Rocker Rails (2) - 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 27
    Rocker Stretcher - 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 x 23
    Back Supports (2) - 1 1/2 x 2 5/8 x 27
    Front Seat Slat - 1 x 3 1/2 x 26 7/8
    Seat Slats (4) - 1 x 3 1/2 x 31 1/2
    Brackets (2) - 1 x 5 1/2 x 3 1/2
    Arms (2) - 1 x 5 1/2 x 29 15/16
    Outer Back Slats (2) - 1 x 3 1/2 x 30 7/8
    Mid Back Slats (2) - 1 x 3 1/2 x 33
    Center Back Slat - 1 x 3 1/2 x 35
     
    All parts are listed in actual dimensions. Refer to the Cutting Diagram below left (a larger version is in the pdf download below) as a guide for determining the specific board from which to cut the parts.

    Position the parts as shown below and attach using glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws. Create two assemblies as shown.

     

    Use the layout below for creating the Front and Back Seat Rails. Set your pocket hole jig and drill bit for 1 1/2" stock.

     

    Position the parts as shown below and attach using glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws.

     

    Use the layouts below for creating the Rocker Rails and Rocker Stretcher. Set your pocket hole jig and drill bit for 1 1/2" stock. 

     

    Position the parts as shown below and attach using glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws.

     

    Position the parts as shown below and attach using glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws.

     

    Use the layout below for creating the Back Supports. Set your pocket hole jig and drill bit for 1 1/2" stock. 

     

    Position the parts as shown (or flip the Back Supports over so the pocket holes are facing down) below and attach using glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws.  

     

    Position the assembly you just created to the other rocker and leg assembly and attach using glue and 2 1/2" pocket hole screws. Use the previous instructions as a guide for positioning.   

     

    Position the Front Seat Slat as shown (flush with the front edge of the Front Legs) and attach to the Front Seat Rail using glue and 2 1/2" deck screws.   

     

    Position the Seat Slats as shown and attach to the Seat Rails using glue and 2 1/2" deck screws.  

     

    Use the layout above for creating the Brackets. Set your pocket hole jig and drill bit for 1" stock.  

     

    Position the parts as shown and attach using glue and 1 1/2" pocket hole screws.  

     

    Use the layout below for creating the Arms.     

     

    Position the parts as shown and attach using glue and 1 1/2" pocket hole screws through the Brackets and Front Legs and into the Arms. Also drive 2 1/2" deck screws through the Back Legs and into the Arms. Use at least two deck screws per Arm.     

     

    Position the parts as shown and attach using glue 2 1/2" deck screws. Use two screws at each point where the Slats meet the Back Supports.
