  • Chief's Shop is powered by Chris Hill, who has more than 20 years    of journalism experience in newspapers, trade publications, and magazines that spans operations/business management, circulation, production, editorial, advertising, and online development. He has been working with wood since childhood.

You could say he has woodworking and carpentry in his blood, with both grandfathers and an uncle having been home builders, another uncle a master carpenter, and father whose shop full of Craftsman tools was the birthplace of his love for woodworking.

His desire to create and demonstrate project plans began at age 13, when he won a District 4-H award for demonstrating a bandsaw   basket project.

Fast forward to 2005, and Chris began his five-year stint as the     editor of the Lowe's Creative Ideas woodworking program. During   this time, he helped pioneer the concept of beginner woodworking project plans that yielded pro-looking results that is emulated throughout the blogosphere today. He was responsible for dozens upon dozens     of uncredited “ghost-written” woodworking and DIY plans, instructions, illustrations, and construction. He designed, illustrated, built, modeled  for, and art directed scores of how-to shoots in studios and his own shop, and worked on several how-to woodworking video shoots as the behind-the-scenes builder/carpenter. Oh, and during this time he also managed to serve as editor of six other custom magazines.

In 2009, he started designing project plans under his own name, and switched under the Chief's Shop moniker in 2010. In addition to   chiefs-shop.com, he creates plans for DIYNetwork.com, has developed illustrations for plant bed plans for Bonnie Plants, "ghost" develops plans for various company marketing plans, and has written for The Family Handyman, Woodcraft Magazine, Massey Ferguson FarmLife magazine, as well as marketing material for Alabama Power.
